Black is a macOS app for managing, running and triggering AppleScript and JavaScript for Automation (JXA) scripts.

Contact

Email hi@kod.systems. Please include your Black version (Black ▸ About Black), your macOS version, and what you were doing when the problem happened.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 Sonoma or later
  • Apple silicon or Intel Mac

Install and update

  1. Download the latest version from apps.kod.systems/app/black.
  2. Open the DMG and drag Black to Applications.
  3. Black checks for updates when it launches. To check now, choose Check for Updates… in the Black menu or the menu bar menu. Updates download in your browser; install them the same way.

Common questions

A script fails with "Not authorized to send Apple events". macOS blocks a script from controlling another app until you allow it. Open System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Automation, find Black, and turn on the app your script controls. Then run the script again.

The webhook or AI access server doesn't start. Another app is probably using its port (8765 for webhooks and 8766 for AI access, by default). Choose a different port in Black's Settings.

Warden says it's waiting for approval in Login Items. macOS needs you to allow Warden's helper. Click Open Login Items… in Black's Settings, or open System Settings ▸ General ▸ Login Items, and turn Black on.

My copy of Black is 1.0 and doesn't offer the update. Early test builds were numbered 1.0, and release numbers now start at 0.1. Download the current version once from the link above; later updates will then reach you.

Where are my scripts stored? In ~/Library/Application Support/Black/Scripts, unless you chose another folder or MongoDB in Settings.

Uninstall

  1. If you installed Warden, click Remove helper in Black's Settings first.
  2. Quit Black and move it from Applications to the Trash.
  3. To remove your data too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/Black. Black's Keychain items are named systems.kod.black; you can delete them in Keychain Access.
